Poker News in Brief: July 19-25, 2010

There was a hearing for Barney Frank’s new online poker bill, two big live tournaments began, tons of online action and of course everyone got to know the 2010 November Nine a bit better. There are always lesser-known stories that threaten to fall through the cracks, however.

2010 WSOP Masseuses On The Rail

Yes sexy cute massage girl, we noticed you too. The unheralded heroes of the 2010 WSOP (and really, every WSOP) are the masseuses who have to rubdown all of the slobs (and  occasionally, Patrik Antonius, raawwwrrr ) in the poker room. This year, the company that hires these massage girls really stepped up their game. Lots of attractive girls and by our count, only one or two dudes. It’s long overdue, but these massage girls deserve their own gallery. It’s not much, but at least it’s some recognition other than the $2-per-minute they charge.

UKIPT Brighton: Oliver Schaffmann is our day 1b chipleader

Day two always seems to be a tougher field yet players always clamour to sign themselves up for it. Is it that rest day inbetween that they don’t want? The extra day of expenses? Whatever it is we he had 143 players enter today, some 27 more than day 1a, making a total of 259 runners for this inaugural £1,000 UKIPT Brighton main event. The young guns and pros turned up in their droves creating some absolutely filthy table draws with the likes of Team PokerStars Pros Jude Ainsworth, Vicky Coren and Julian Thew, well known faces such as Neil Channing, Liam Flood, Fintan Gavin, Joe Grech, as well as the online brigade of Toby Lewis, Chris Brammer, John Eames and EPT Deauville winner Jake Cody. Not all were destined to make it through the day though.

Three Team UB Pros in Contention in WSOP Main Event

Day 4 of the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event is in the books and the remaining players likely slept well last night, as they had all made the money shortly after Tuesday’s dinner break. Now is also about the time that the online poker rooms start to dream about their sponsored pros making it to the last few tables, or even the November Nine. One of those poker rooms, UB.com , has three of its pros remaining: Adam “Roothlus” Levy , Eric “ basebaldy ” Baldwin , and Brandon Cantu

Markup of Barney Frank Internet Gambling Bill Expected Soon

At the 2010 World Series of Poker ( WSOP ) in Las Vegas, officials from the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) told Poker News Daily that the major pro-internet gambling bill in Congress may be marked up this week. However, no hearing appears on the schedule of the House Financial Services Committee. The PPA had originally expected HR 2267, the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act , to be marked up the week of July 12th. However, the only meeting that appears on the schedule of the House Financial Services Committee is in Canfield, Ohio on Tuesday morning. There, the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations will hold a hearing entitled, “After the Financial Crisis: Ongoing Challenges Facing Delphi Retirees.” Congressman Barney Frank (D-MA), who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, also introduced HR 2267 in May 2009. The bill is up to 69 co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle, but has generated just six new endorsers since 2010 began.
