All Star Week Day 3: Challengers crank up the pressure

by Chris Edge Last year the inaugural All Star week went right down to the wire, with both sides deadlocked at 17-17 going into the final match of the series. The Pros ultimately prevailed to come out on top 18-17 victors. Today the prospect of a repeat scenario seems as distant as ever, with the Challengers on Tuesday racking up a further four victories, surging them into an unprecedented 8-2 lead. In short, the Challengers have been running away with it. On Wednesday the Pros pinned their All-Star hopes on WSOP stalwarts Hevad Khan, Ivan Demidov, Joe Cada, Joe Hachem and Johnny Lodden to get their beleaguered campaign back on track. True to form however, it didn’t start at all well for the Pros.

Faced with relatively poor attendance in circuit events this year, the World Series of Poker is changing things up in the upcoming season of the WSOP Circuit Tour with a national championship that will award a coveted bracelet. The biggest change for the WSOP Circuit, a series of events nationwide leading up the World Series off Poker in Vegas, is the addition of a season-ending national championship. Part of determining who makes it into the national championship will be a new rankings system that takes into account results in all of the main circuit events. A total of 100 players will qualify for the national championship

WSOP Blog: Johnny Chan a chip leader after Day 1C of the 2010 WSOP main event

In a week I’m going to look back and say that Day 1C was the day when the 2010 WSOP main event really began. A field of 2,143 players turned out for their first day of action and despite losing big names like Phil Hellmuth, Tom Dwan and Huck Seed, it was a day where the notables shined through especially one former main event champion.

WSOP From The Rail: Main Event Day 1c

Catch up with the World Series of Poker main event on day 1c, where a former main event champ has a big stack. More than 2,300 players registered for day 1c, pushing the total number of players with one more “day one” to go at just under 5,000. If day 1d tops 2,000 players, this will be the second largest main event in history. At worst it appears this year will be ahead of last year’s field size. The big story out of day 1c is Johnny Chan, the two-time main event champion, who was second in chips with 164K.

Alaei Lights The Fuse On July 4th: WSOP Day 38 Recap

The Main Event is just round the corner – Day 1a starting tomorrow – but there were still another four big prizepool tournaments to excite the many fascinated World Series of Poker fans. We saw two tournaments play to finals – which will be settled tomorrow – one more Championship bracelet handed out and the postponed Tournament of Champions event also played to a finish. It was a day to whet the appetite for the poker riches that lie ahead. Here’s how it played out. Event 54 – $1k No-Limit Hold’em David Peters entered the day handily-placed as chip leader, but with 47 players still left, he was going to have to work hard if he was to maintain this position by the end of the day. Work hard he did however, using guile, good poker sense and just a little luck to keep control of the chip lead and by the time the tournament had been reduced to the final nine, he still headed the pack.
